BYBLOS: CULTURE AND MODERNITY
GAIA-heritage and the Urban Planning Institute at the Lebanese American University co-held a symposium on the theme of “Byblos: Culture and Modernity” on June 9-10, 2016 at LAU in Byblos. It brought together archeologists, architects, historians and urban planners to discuss various questions including the causes of Byblos emergence and sleep, its present prospects and opportunities and a vision of Byblos for a sustainable development.
International speakers presented case studies from different Mediterranean cities, analysing urban development and challenges in harbour cities. Presentations on Byblos, its history, and the latest archeological findings about the Phoenician harbour also allowed for a discussion of opportunities and limits brought by the city’s World Heritage Site. At the end of the symposium, a round table was organised to present recommendations to the Municipality of Byblos.
