Management and Economics of Cultural and Natural Heritage

Museum in Mazar-i-Sharif

The Northern province of Afghanistan is amongst the richest in the country in terms of cultural heritage and archeological sites; and the very city of Marzar-i-Sharif owns its name to the famous Blue Mosque, jewel of the 15th century islamic architecture.

GAIA-Heritage was contracted in 2008 by the French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan to undertake the conception and the implementation of an archeological museum, to be located in a new district five kilometres away from the city centre. The project was undertaken as an attempt to save the invaluable heritage of the region from being plundered, but also in the optimistic perspective to develop tourism once the country reaches stability.

GAIA was notably responsible for the fundraising operations and for the preparation of a management plan for all the archaeological sites of the region.

However, the project is now on hold.
