Management and Economics of Cultural and Natural Heritage

EUROMED Heritage

Within the European Union Programme Euromed-Heritage IV, GAIA-heritage supported the implementation of four projects through the Regional Monitoring and Support Unit which provides technical support and control to the program.

• Mare Nostrum: A Heritage trail along the Phoenician maritime routes and historic port-cities of the Mediterranean Sea

Re-valuate Mediterranean historical port-cities’ heritage along the route of the Phoenician ports. Cultural itineraries were designed within each port and linking all six targeted cities among themselves. It qualifies as a plan for sustainable cultural tourism, promoting traditional crafts and the revival of urban areas into lively places for local communities.

• Siwa & Tangier: Cultural heritage for a better life

Pilot Actions to protect and promote the culture of Amazigh in Siwa, Egypt, and the built heritage of the Medina of Tangiers, Morocco. The main challenge in this regard lied in the capability to sustain protection principles for the non-material heritage of the Amazigh.

• Athena: Ancient theaters enhancement for new actualities

Trigger interest in the importance of cultural, material and non-material values of theaters, and make them more accessible to the general public. In the Mediterranean, ancient theaters represent important cultural sites and bear witness to old vestiges. The project had a special interest in the ancient theaters of Amman, Syracuse, Carthage, Merida and Cherchell.

• Foundations for a Strong Future: Youth in Lebanon and Jordan to promote cultural heritage

Promote the ownership of material and non-material heritage by the youth. The project offered specialised training to young students from Lebanon and Jordan in a bid to introduce them to heritage, its protection and the values it represents.
