Famagusta Walled City

Famagusta is one of the most important, greatly fortified harbour-cities of the Mediterranean. This historic Walled City, rich in built heritage, is one of  the finest examples of medieval architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Within the UNDP-UNOPS Partnership For the Future programme (PFF), GAIA-heritage has been advising PFF and the Municipality of Famagusta for the revision of the Walled City master plan and for the preparation of a three-year long implementation programme. This included a charter for the walled city, improvement of public spaces, preservation and valorisation of heritage, strategic tourism management and economical revitalisation.

In 2007, Gaia-Heritage called upon to evaluate the improvements made on the implementation of the city’s revitalisation plan and help the municipality undertake 3 pilot projects.
