International Conference on Contemporary Architecture in Historic Cities

The International Conference on Contemporary Architecture in Historic Cities took place in Seville from September 17th to 19th 2013. It brought together architects, urban planners, economists and specialists of the arts to discuss the insertion of contemporary elements in historic settings. The aim was to identify the instruments, criteria and tools to do so while properly maintaining the site’s historical value.

The conference challenged commonly accepted principles and attitudes, reinventing concepts that would allow for a better management of the urban built heritage, especially when inscribed on the World Heritage List. It also aimed at introducing advances in new technologies and bridge the gap with other fields of urban studies which do not fall under the ‘heritage’ label, such as urban economics and urban morphology analysis. In doing so, the conference identifying new avenues of research and ways to integrate urban heritage within a dynamic city.
